Another Caribbean Commonwealth realm could be looking at creating its own head of state. This time, the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Phillip J. Pierre, has told his parliament:
My government is committed to bettering our governance framework and promoting a more secure and accountable democratic system. Constitutional Reform has languished for way too long. My government intends to reignite the discourse on what form and style our democracy should take, especially within the context of the technological era of ICT. The Parliamentary Committee created for this purpose will be revamped and mandated to consider specific areas such as prime ministerial term limits, a fixed date for General Elections, the appointment of a Deputy Speaker, and the matter of becoming a Republic.
So that makes Belize, Jamaica, The Bahamas and now Saint Lucia all looking at making the transition. Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are the remaining four realms where there hasn’t been any specific announcement (to the best of our knowledge!).
