Write a letter to a newspaper editor

Letters to the editor are often the most read section of daily newspapers. Here's some hints for a good letter to the editor:

  • Keep your letter short - about 200 words - and punchy.
  • Stick to making one point for each letter - you can write plenty more later to cover other points.
  • Only write about the republic issue if it's been in the news recently - within the last week.
  • Where you can, refer to the Republican Movement.
  • Remember to include your full name, postal address and phone number.

Call talkback radio

Around 15% of the general public listens to talkback radio. Talkback is a popular forum for debate. Here's some tips for calling talkback radio:

  • Make a list of things you want to say - your key points. Cross them out as you make them.
  • Keep your key points short and concise.
  • Stay on topic, don't get distracted by red herrings.
  • Where you can, refer to the Republican Movement.

Contact your MP

Letters to members of parliament aren't simply binned - often MPs use them to gauge the views of their electorate and form their views on issues based on them.

  • Make sure you include your contact details.
  • Like letters to the editor, short, punchy and concise letters are best.
  • Don't be offensive - remember MPs are there to be convinced.
  • See the Parliament website for a list of all MPs.

Share Republican Movement publications

The Republican Movement has a large archive of policy papers, reports, brochures and factsheets to help inform the public on the republic issue. We encourage supporters of a republic to use our resources (which we develop with significant input from members) - show our brochures with friends, discuss reports and policy papers, use our factsheets for debates, your own research, etc.
